Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd is a Japanese automaker which is renowned for its range of small cars and off-road vehicles. The company was formed in 1951 and was a successor to Hatsudoki. It started the import of cars to Europe prior to the 1960s but did not attain major sales figures until the 80s. Toyota owns 51.2% shares of the company and has a major veto influence in board decisions. Daihatsu supplies cars, transmissions and engines under different names to various automakers, the prime one among them is Malaysia’s major automaker, Perdua which sells cars in UK. The Charade is a supermini manufactured by Daihatsu and sold from 1977 to 2000. Daihatsu classifies the Charade as a large “compact” car in order to differentiate it from the rest of the compact lineups like the Daihatsu Cuore. The first generation of the Charade rolled out in 1977 and was available either as a 3-door or a 5-door hatchback. The first model was powered by a smaller 993 cc 3-cylinder engine which generated 50hp JIS. The Charade G20 was massively popular in Chile during the 1980s; it came with an 843cc 3-cylinder engine. It also came in a second hatchback version featuring two small windows in the rear.
The third generation Charade, the G100 was launched in 1987. It was originally powered by a 1.0 L 3-cylinder engine and also a 1.3L four-cylinder with single carburetor (HC-C). Later on a 1.0 L turbo diesel, a 1.0 L twin-cam turbo (CB70) (CB80) called GTti, a 1.3 L 4-cylinder fuel injector and a 3-cylinder versions were added. Daihatsu released a GTti version in Japan and called it the GT-XX.; it offered more features like a sunroof, air-conditioning, power steering, and power windows. The interiors too were quite different from the GTti, for instance the fuse box was fitted inside the car and the seats were modified and made plusher. The exterior too saw some changes like speedline alloys, a different spoile,r and side skirts. The third generation Cherada retailed in the US market for just four years. The high price, confusing translations into English, and poor sales sites saw the sales figures hit rock bottom and the company withdrew from the American market. The Daihatsu Rocky is a small SUV which is also called by the name Sportrak and Feroza. These are fitted with the 1600cc DOHC or SOHC Daihatsu engine and provided either two wheel or four wheel drive. The engine is known to suffer from poor air induction snags but it can be improved by fitting an air filtration system which is supplied by Daihatsu.
