2008 is the 100th anniversary of Ford’s revolutionary and renowned Model T. The Model T essentially put the world on wheels, and it introduced the concept of mass production, and thus affordability. The roots of the Ford Motor Company date back to 1903, when Henry Ford founded the business in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford is the third largest automaker in the world, based on the volume of worldwide sales. Although the Model T got things rolling, as it were, other popular Ford models throughout the globe are America’s beloved Mustang, the European Mondeo, the EcoSport in South America, and the Territory in Asia.
The Ford Modular engine
Fords overhead camshaft, V10, and V8 engines are currently their higher volume lines. These have taken the place of the Windsor small block, and the 385 big block engines that were common in the 1990’s. Rumors abound over the name itself, but all the same, the Modular engine did not get its name from its design or sharing of certain parts among the engine family. The engine gets its name because of the way it is manufactured in the plan. Due to the way the production facility is tooled, different types of engines can be manufactured by switching out the tooling parts, as apposed to having to set up an entirely new assembly line. This method has been implemented for use in making Ford trucks, and in Lincolns as well as in Ford and Mercury cars.
4.6 L Modular Engine
The 4.6 L was the first production of Modular engine which was a 2-valve SOHC V8 engine that was introduced in the year 1991 for Lincoln Town Car. Over a few years the 4.6 L has been offered in several versions like 2-Valve SOHC, 4-valve DOHC and 3-valve SOHC. They are also being produced with both aluminum and iron blocks. The 4.6 Ls stroke and bore are almost square at 90 mm and 90.2 mm respectively. The deck heights for all the 4.6 blocks are nearly 227 mm. The connecting rod length of the engine is nearly 150.7 mm center to center which offers the 4.6 L nearly a 1.67:1 ratio of rod to stroke. The cylinder bore spacing would basically measure 100 mm which is rather common in all the Modular engines.
The 5.4 L Modular Engine
The 5.4 L V8 engine falls under the Modular engine family which was first introduced in the 1997 Ford F-150 as Triton V8. The stroke and bore diameter are 105.8 mm and 90.2 respectively and the increased stroke required a taller 256 mm block deck height engine. This 5.4 L modular engine was built at the Windsor Engine plant located at Windsor in Ontario. The engine was also made available in three different configurations the DOHC 4-valve, SOHC 3-valve with VCT and SOHC 2-valve since it was introduced in 1997.
