The Alpha engine was the first Hyundai engine which was designed in Korea. The engine was basically a SOHC straight-4 3 valve version which was released in both a naturally aspirated and turbo version. The alpha engine was first launched in 1993 when it was fitted to the Hyundai Scoupe. Alpha engines were manufactured in 1.3 L and 1.5L versions. The 1.5L version came with a 75.5mm bore and a stroke length of 83.5mm. Hyundai later released a 1.6L Alpha II version but this engine series has been discontinued. The G4EH was a 1.3L engine capable of generating 71hp at 5500rpm with a torque rating of 81 ft-lb at 3000 rpm. The G4EK was a 1.5 L engine and generated a decent 92 hp at 5500 rpm with a torque rating of 97 ft-lb at 4000 rpm.

When DOHC was introduced into the Alpha II, the power output was stretched to 101 hp at 5800 rpm. In 1993, Hyundai introduced a turbocharged version of the Alpha which generated 115 hp at 5500 rpm. The Alpha engine family continued up to the 2005 Accent car. The G4ED Alpha II was revamped with a larger displacement of 1.6L by increasing the bore to 76.5mm and the stroke length to 87mm. The alpha series featured an engine block made out of cast iron with DOHC aluminum cylinder heads that had 4 valves per cylinder. The series made use of the MFI injection system and came with forged steel connecting rods. The Alpha series is manufactured in Ulsan, South Korea.

The Sigma series was initially launched as a simple V7 engine with a displacement of 2.5 L to 3.5 L. The G6AV was a DOHC carburetor engine with a displacement of 2.5 L, a bore of 83.5mm and a stroke length of 3.0 at 76mm. It generated 160 hp and a torque rating of 151 ft-lb at 4500 rpm. Hyundai’s latest engine is the engine line that replaced the Omega series. The series is reported to be capable of delivering an impressive 375 hp and a torque of 333 ft-lb when running on high quality unleaded fuel. There are reports that Hyundai will come up with a 5.0 L and 5.5 L version with superchargers. The engine has 4 valves for each of the cylinders along with variable timing. The Tau series engine is fitted to the Kia Borrego and the Hyundai Genesis models.
