Land Rover

The Land Rover is both a multi-purpose vehicle as well as an all terrain vehicle. The Land Rover Company, based in Gaydon England, has produced and used various types of engines during the past years but all of them were from one of the three engine families. The engine known as “inlet exhaust over petrol” which was designed in both six and four cylinder variations, was frequently used in the first production line of Land Rovers during the mid 1940’s. The engine’s origin, though, dates to pre-war Rovers.
The 4 cylinder engine known as “overhead valve” which was produced as both a diesel and a petrol had first been used in the 1957 Rovers during the end of the Series 1 production. After many improvements, the engine developed into the model known as the TDi 300. This Turbodiesel is still in production even now, for several overseas markets.

The 2052cc overhead Diesel valve was one of the first diesel engines of Land Rover and was also the first small and high speed diesel engines to be produced in the UK. This engine appeared in the year 1957 where it was used largely for the Series II production, remaining in production until 1961. The later 2286cc engine was very similar to this engine but included a few internal differences. Several Land Rover vehicles that are still being used today have these very engines under the hood. However, the 51bhp was actually not good enough during the late 1950s and you will hardly find any of these engines in use today.

2286cc Overhead Valve Petrol, Three bearing crank

The “Three bearing crank” engine was one of the most used in the Land Rover vehicles. The engine is very closely linked to the 2052cc diesel engine but it has cylinders that are bored directly at the block. The previous engines included some limitations that led to a revamp of most of the internal parts for the 1961 Series IIA. This however remained unchanged until the 1980s when the five bearing crank finally had taken its place. During the year 1961 Land Rover vehicles also included the 2286cc Diesel overhead valve three bearing crank including the 2286 cc petrol engine during the early stage of Series IIA production. This engine had a common cylinder block. After many significant improvements, the engine produced power output of nearly 62 bhp.
