Mitsubishi is a key Japanese car manufacturer who is famed for its legacy of manufacturing some of the best small to intermediate capacity cars on the market. The Mitsubishi Turbo Fours of the 80s were the platform for the present day massively successful Rally based Lancer/Carisma/Evolution engines. Also receiving recognition are the newest range of MIVEC engines which feature some ingenious valve control design and are able to generate high levels of power considering its modest capacity. The most powerful Mitsubishi however has to be the 209kW 3 liter twin turbo V6 which is fitted in the 3000GT/GTO. The numbering code devised by Mitsubishi to distinguish various engines tends to be a little confusing. The number 4 denotes four cylinders and the number 6 denotes six cylinders. The numerical suffix 12 represents 2.0 liter, 12 denotes 2.5 liter, 36 again represents 2.0 liter, 54 denotes 2.6 liter, 61 indicates 1.6 liter, 72 is for 3.0 liter, 73 signifies 2.5 liter, 91 represents 1.5 liter and so on. All of the six cylinder Mitsubishi high end engines are set in the V configuration.
The most powerful of them, the G72 twin turbo generates enough power to drive the rather heavy 3000GT from 0 to 5 100 km/he in just 5 seconds. The attributes include a displacement of 3.0 liters, 8.9: 1 compression, 24 valves, simultaneously powered twin turbo, quad cams, and dual air-to-air intercoolers and to top it all off, a high tech EFI system. The result is an output of 209kW at 6000 rpm with a scorching torque of 427Nm at a mere 2500 rpm. Now that is one very flexible engine. However, in Japan its development has been eclipsed by the Nissan RB26DETT, but it is assumed with an added exhaust intake, a bit of boost modifications and an intercooler, this could easily compete with the 300kW. Mitsubishi also launched a naturally aspirated version of this high performance engine christened the 6G72. This engine comes with all of the turbo power but has a higher static compression ratio of 11.0. This kind of compensates for the absence of turbo and allows t to generate 179 kW at 5750 and a decent 304Nm at 3500. The 3.5 version engines are about 17% larger. The DOHC 6G74 turbo is compatible for almost all front and all-wheel drive cars. These generate 194kW at around 6000rpm. Mitsubishi engines are able to generate this deceivingly large amount of power from smaller engines not because of the turbocharger but due to the use of MIVEC technology.
