Renault is a French automaker which produced buses, cars, vans and trucks. The company is renowned for its numerous revolutionary designs, motor racing and hi tech security technologies. The French automaker manufacturer has access to a state of the art shop floor and R&D labs which allows them to come up with some of the most reliable engines on the market. Renault lists its technical specifications within two distinct systems. One is a numeric system which has been used since the origin of the company till the mid-80s. Renault has since switched to an alphanumeric system. In the alphanumeric system, the format followed is Xny-zzz where X specifies the name of the engine family, n is a single digit code which specifies the engine structure for instance 1 stands for a petrol engine with a single-barrel carburetor and parallel valves, 4 stands for a petrol engine with four valves per cylinder, 8 is for a diesel engine with indirect injection. Y is a single letter which indicates the displacement for instance. A is for engines with less than 700cc displacement, B-U encompasses engines with displacements ranging from 750cc to 2250cc, and V-Z denotes engines with more than 2250cc. zzz is a three-character alphanumeric code which designates the main details of the variant’s configuration for instance turbocharger, automatic or manual transmission or the presence of a catalytic converter. An odd number denotes an engine which has been configured for automatic transmission and an even number denotes a manual transmission.
The A engine series from Renault is an all-aluminum inline overhead valve engine which was produced in three different variants. The B series refers to the cast-iron overhead valve 4-inline which was designed during the mid 1940s for the 4CV. The B stands for Billancourt factory where it was manufactured. It is also known by an alternate name, the Ventoux engine. The C series was manufactured in the “Cleon” factory and was a giant leap in technology when compared to the B series. Like the B series it had a cast iron overhead valve 4 –inline engine designed for the Renault 8. It featured an extremely sturdy and yet low cost design and was continuously refined over the years and was used in almost every Renault supermini and compact till 1992. Renault developed the Z engine jointly with Volvo and PSA, and hence also referred to it as the PRV engine. This all aluminum overhead camshaft V6 was introduced in the Renault 30 and later made its way onto the Espace, Alpine, Safrane, and Laguna models.
