The Subaru Impreza is a small car which was released in 1993 and that would later go on to become the flagship of the company. The Impreza replaced the once popular Leone which was finally discontinued do to the aging EA series engine. The Impreza was powered by the reliable EJ series engine which was also featured in the superior Subaru Legacy. Compared to vehicles in the same class such as the Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer, and Toyota Corolla, Impreza had AWD. As of 1996 the feature had been made standard in some major automotive markets. Subaru chose to stick to the reliable boxer engine for the Impreza. The engine is inline with the transmission and this minimizes the potential for rollover, as the center of gravity is lower compared to other offset engines. The Subaru has a consistent layout which is lightweight and allows it to support the all-wheel-drive with absolute ease. The boxer design is long favored for its vibration negating properties as each movement of the piston is countered by an opposing piston in a different cylinder bank. This eliminates the need for any counter-rotating, weighted crankshafts, or harmonic balancers, as they are more commonly referred to. The front shafts being of equal length also reduce torque when steering.

A distinguishing characteristic of Subaru engines is the flat layout, as can be found in the Impreza. The engine choices in the Impreza include the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liter, all of which were available in naturally aspirated versions. Also available was a turbocharged version of the 2.0 liter engine. In the Japanese market, the turbocharged engine EJ20, generated 180 kW to 210 kW depending on the model and the year. The car had a different rating outside of Japan, rated at 155kW and was marketed as the 2.0, 2.0 GT, 2.0GT Turbo and the 2.0 WRX. The Trim levels were the Sport, GL and the LX; these were powered by 1.6 liter engine and were all-wheel-drive. The GL trim levels came in two variants, one with a front-wheel-drive(2WD) other being all-wheel-drive(AWD). Subaru cars which were launched in 1993 allowed a choice of 1.6 and 1.8 flat-4 engines, the 1.6 version being 2WD and the 1.8 being retailed only with the AWD. The Sport version came with alloy wheels and only the 2.0 liter engine. In the North American market the model range comprises of the 2.5 liter, 2,5i, a turbocharged 2.5 liter and an Outback Sport.
