Volvo is well known for the manufacturing of buses, trucks, drive system for various marine applications and aerospace components. The company was founded in the city of Gothenburg as a break away from the famed bearing makers, SKF. Volvo was not very active until August of 1926, when the SKF Sales Manager and an Engineer set up the manufacturing section within SKF and named it Volvo AB. SKF ultimately sold its shares in the company. Volvo was listed on the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and remains active to this day, but the company was delisted from NASDAQ after June 2007. The first batch of Volvo automobiles, the Volvo OV 4 rolled out on 14 April, 1927 and is regarded as the official founding date of the company.

Most used Volvo engines are from the 1975 series and later. The majority of Volvo components last a very long time and most of the mechanical parts will have at least a hundred thousand miles on them if not more.
