Zastava Koral, popularly referred to as "Yugo," is a subcompact car built by the Zastava Corporation. The car’s design was inspired from that of the Fiat 127, Fiat 128 and the Autobiabchi A112. The Yugo was launched in the United States by Malcolm Bricklin who wanted to introduce a simple and less expensive car to the American market. The car was sold in the American market from 1985 until 1991 with sales figures touching 45,000 a year. The Yugo is still under production in some parts of former Yugoslavian countries but features an updated design. When the car was introduced in the US, it was priced at less than $4000, which made the Yugo the lowest priced car in the US at that time. The United Nations' sanctions on Yugoslavia during the early 1990s resulted in the withdrawal of the car from American roads.

The brand entered the market with four models, the entry level GV, the almost identical GVL and GVS which featured minor upholstery and trim upgrades, and the high-end GVX which came fitted with a 1300cc engine, alloy wheels, plush interiors and five speed transmissions. Yugo later introduced a Carbio convertible in 1988. In 1990 the GV and the GVL were revamped with a 1300 cc OHC engine and a five speed manual transmission, with a Renault based automatic transmission offered as optional. Thus the GV Plus became the standard model. Yugo’s association with the Fiat 127 allowed them to modify the GV version with Abarth racing accessories and was even sent to compete in SCCA approved events. Malcolm Bricklin made a deal with Zastava in the year 2002 which helped the Yugo make a comeback on American roads with the ZMW. The Yugo 45 saw a number of derivate models like the Ciao, Koral FV, Tempo and Cabrio.

All of Yugo's engines were fitted with a carburetor until the late 1980’s when, finally, the GVX-EFI became the first Yugo car to feature fuel-injection. The GVX-EFI came fitted with a 1300cc engine which was designed by Porsche for the Fiat. The fuel injection was courtesy of BOSCH and featured a multiport fuel injection with a Lambda sensor and a three-way catalytic converter. Yugo’s collaboration with Fiat meant that their engines shared the same durability of the Italian auto giants. There were some issues early on but they were soon resolved.
