Cadillac has used the name Deville on many of its luxury vehicles however it became its own model in 1965. When the fleetwood was axed from Cadillac’s lineup, the Deville became the largest sedan in the Cadillac line up.
From 1965 through 1970 The Devile was available as a two door hardtop, a twod door convertible, a four door hardtop and a foordoor sedan. It utilized two engine types: a 429 cubic in V8 engine and 472 cubic inch V8 engine. Both of these early engines came with a three speed automatic transmission.
The basic body style of the Deville was redesigned in 1971 but the engine would remain unchanged for the time being. In 1975, the Deville would receive a new engine. The 472 would be replaced with a 210 hp 500 V8 engine. This was the same year that the Air Cushion Restraint System would be introduced. Though the air cushion name is unusual, most would recognize this system by its more modern name – air bags. Though common place today, in 1975, this was used as a unique selling point for the Cadillac Deville. Unfortunately the air bag system was still in its infancy and proved to bulky and expensive and was abandoned in 1976.
Of course Styles would change again and the next generation of Deville was no exception. This generation would range from 1977 to 1985. There would be only one body style, the four door sedan but there would be five different engines including a diesel. The diesel engine for these years would be a 5.7 Liter diesel V8 engine that would be included from 1978 through 1985.
The next generation change for the Deville would occur from 1989 through 1993. The body style would remain a four door sedan. There would be two engine selections. These would include a 4.5 Liter V8 engine and a 4.9 Liter L26 V8. Both of these engines would be offered with a four speed automatic transmission.
Though the Cadillac Deville was a popular car throughout its history, redesigns took it only so far and the actual Deville was discontinued in 2005.
