The Cadillac STS is a direct descendant of one of Cadillac’s premier luxury vehicles, the Cadillac Seville. The STS, which stands for Seville Touring Sedan became its own model line in 2005. It is produced by the Cadillac division of General Motors. Assembly of the STS occurs in Lansing, Michigan in the United States. Another assembly plant operates in Shanghai, China.
There are two versions of the midsize luxury vehicle. The STS is more performance oriented than its sister, the Cadillac SLS, which is more luxury oriented. The SLS actually stands for Seville Luxury Sedan.
Since its inception in 2005, the STS and SLS are considered by Cadillac to be the headliners in the Cadillac line up. When the L37 Northstar V8 engine was introduced in 2006, the STS and the SLS both received these engines.
Both are obviously classed as luxury vehicles and both are styled on in as four door sedans.
Though the earlier Cadillac Seville had front wheel drive, this was retired along with the Seville and Cadillac reverted to rear wheel drive on both the STS and the SLS. All wheel drive is also offered. The STS is the first in the Cadillac division to receive the all wheel drive system. The STS also has the distinction of having the Magnetic Ride Control suspension.
Beginning in 2007, Cadillac made another upgrade to the STS engines and the SLS engines. Both vehicles are offered with a 3.6 L High Feature LY7 V6 that has 255 horsepower and the larger 4.6 L Northstar LH2 V8 engine which has 320 horsepower.
One of Cadillac’s goals for the STS was for the vehicle to be slightly more compact than the Seville in overall length while at the same time increasing the interior room. The SLS was stretched slightly though as it was felt that some loyal Seville customers would not be comfortable with the overall shorter length of the SLS.
