The Dodge Stealth was a captive import that was market by Chrysler but actually produced by Mitsubishi Motors and marketed throughout the rest of the world as a Mitsubishi GTO. It was also marketed on a smaller scale in the United States as a Mitsuvishi 3000GT
The original concept car was the Mistubishi HSX first seen at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. It had been designed to capture some of the market from the Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX, the Skyline GT-R and the Toyota Supra. The new concept car was much more successful that Mitsubishi could have hopped for and became the flagship for Mitsubishi for the next ten years.
The Dodge Stealth had originally been intended to be the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 race in 1991 however because the car was actually a foreign import though it boar the name of an American car manufacturer, the labor union for Chrysler objected to its appearance at the race. The then concept car, Dodge Viper was substituted for the Stealth at the last minute.
Since the Dodge Stealth and the Mitsubishi 3000GT were identical, then obviously they shared engines. Originally they came with what was called a Peak Power engine with Peak torque. This amounted to a SOHC 12v V6 engine as well as a DOHC 24v V6 engine.
For 1995 and 1996 the Dodge Stealth VR-4 was a special edition retractable hardtop convertible modles that was customized by ASC in California. These cars featured a unique type of convertible system. It was a hard top that was retractable. All the driver had to do was touch a button to retract or close the power top.
