Chevy enthusiasts have waited eagerly for very few releases like theyâ€™ve anticipated the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. It looks great, no doubt. But what excites fans of pony cars is whatâ€™s under the hood. Not satisfied to offer just one engine option, Chevy is introducing three high-performance engines to power the reborn Camaro. The baddest boy of the bunch is the LS3, a horsepower mill thatâ€™s every bit of 6.2 liters, boasting V-8 performance. Not all the testing has been finalized, but most estimates are that this aluminum Generation IV small block will make 422 horsepower with 408 ft lbs of torque. If all that sounds familiar, this is essentially the same engine that has been found under the hood of Chevy Corvettes since 2008, with just a few updates to make it even stronger, and the right choice for the reintroduced muscle car, the 2010 Camaro. Only slightly reduced intake and exhaust systems prevent the LS3 from being as powerful as the Corvette L99.
The tweaking that went into this engine when it was chosen for the 2010 Camaro includes a more durable aluminum block. The window area in the bulkheads has been redesigned to boost the safety factor, because this is the same block that is scheduled to be used in upcoming versions of the LS9, a super-juiced 600 hp engine! The rectangular port cylinder heads include off-set rockers and two large valves per cylinder, with cast aluminum pistons.
The trio of Chevy engines also includes the L99 with the same dimensions as the LS3, making 400 horsepower. This motor will grace the 2010 Camaro with automatic transmission, and is the newest engine in the Chevy power family. The LLT engine offers the most technological advancement in its 3.6 liter body, and boasts 300 horsepower of high output. Take your pick — you can’t go wrong!
