Don't Buy a New Car, Buy a Used Engine!

Honda’s Turbocharged Racer

Honda has created a Civic to race in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, and has given the car a powerful heart. It’s called the HR412E, and is a completely customized small but strong engine.

You know what our cars need? More turbo.

The HR412E is a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged petrol engine and runs highly efficiently. The engine was developed in the R&D center in Tochigi, Japan. According to the Development Project Leader, Daisuke Horiuchi, “…Thermal efficiency is the essential key for improvement. And a race engine is not an exception. This HR412E was born from such though process: aiming for higher efficiency.”

While this engine has been specifically designed for the WTCC racecar, the direction Honda is moving with this engine may be indicative of its designs in future cars. For example, in a release about the Civic Type R, anticipated in 2015, Honda said they would use “technologies developed through Honda’s participation in the World Touring Car Championships,” strongly implying the use of a similar turbocharged engine.

And if the engine performs well in the WTCC and in the Civic Type R, it would be little surprise if Honda uses a similar engine in other new cars.
