Chevrolet's newest compact car addition is the Chevy Cobalt. Added to the line up in 2005, the Cobalt is offered with a number of different trim packages. All Cobalts are currently manufactured at the Lordstowne assembly plant in Lordestowne, Ohio. There are several different models available including the base Cobalt, the Cobalt XFE and the Cobalt SS all of which stay nearly sold out in showrooms across the country. “Our dealers are asking for many more Cobalts than we can build." says Ed Peper, GMNA vice president of Chevrolet. In 2006 a non turbo charged model, the Cobalt SS was added. The Cobalt SS was equipped with a 2.4 L naturally-aspirated Ecotec inline 4 engine. In 2007 Chevrolet replaced the engine to included an upgraded 260 hp turbocharged engine. Mid 2007 saw another change so that the fuel economy was increased to 25 mpg. For 2009, Chevrolet discontinued both the sports coupe and the sports sedan as was the 2.2 L L61 engine. These were replaced by the Chevy 2.2 L LAP engine which has proven to be more fuel efficient as well as more powerful. Three new colors were added and the neutral color interior phased out. Customers can also choose blue tooth capabilities along with a digital performance display.
