The Chevrolet Impala was first introduced in the late 1950's and is one of the few cars that has been in continuous production by General Motors since its inception in 1958. The Impala was Chevrolet's most expensive vehicle from 1958-1965 and was billed as a a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen." From 1960 to 1970 the Impala was the top selling car in the United states and it still dominates today as the 8th best selling sedan world wide.
The earliest model Impala engineswere the 250 cu in (4.1 L) and have grown in size and power to include the Police Package models which utilize a 3.9 liter (237 cu in) V6 which are used in police cruiser models. Because of the low production numbers for the police package, General Motors was not inclined to design a new cooling system for a V8 engine package.
The 2006 Chevy Impala is essentially the same design that is in production through the present and utilizes base engine is a 3.5 liter (214 cu in) V6 producing 211 horsepower. The most notable thing for the current Impala is the SS model which features a Generation IV small-block V8 in a front-wheel drive Chevrolet for the first time.
