The Cadillac XLR is considered a luxury roadster. It is produced by the Cadillac division of General Motors. Production on the new series began in 2003 for the 2004 model year and the car was assembled exclusively in Bowling Green, Kentucky in the United States. As a luxury roadster, Cadillac has based the XLR on the same platform used for the Chevrolet Corvette, the Y body platform. However, Cadillac chose a different engine to place in the XLR. The 4.6 L Northstar V8 engine was the first used in the XLR. It is a two door coupe convertible and features a six speed automatick transmission. Some of these luxuries include heated and coolded leather seats, wood interior trim, remote keyless access, 18 inch alloy wheels, side airbags, navigation, audio and dvd system which shares a seven inch dashboard screen. Beginning in 2006 and running at least through 2009, Cadillac added another stablemate to the XLR that of the Cadillac XLR-V. The XLR-V has a different engine than the XLR. The one utilized for the XLR-V is the same one as in the Cadillac STS-V. It is a supercharged Northstar V8 engine that can to from 0 to 60MPH in 4.7 seconds. The engine that supplies this power produceds 443 horse power. The supercharger and the four intercoolers ar built directly into the intake manifold coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. Brakes taken from the Z51 Chevrolet Corvette are also utilized as are the 19 inch wheels. The public received its first glimpse of the new car when it was featured in a commericial during the Superbowl in 2005. The base price for this car was $98,000 when it was first introduced, with the sticker price rising to over $101,000 by the year 2008.
