The Chevrolet Sprint was marketed in the United States and Canada beginning in 1985. The Sprint was created in a joint venture with Suzuki. General Motors has used the same model platform and marketed the vehicle under several different badges. In fact this model has had 4 different monikers in North America alone. These include Suzuki Swift, Geo Metro, Pontiac Firefly and Chevrolet Metro. General Motors originally offered all of these models as a 3 door hatchback. Due to the popularity of inexpensive subcompact, a 5 door hatchback option was brought out in 1986 named the Chevy Sprint Plus. A Turbo Sprintwas introduced in 1987 and this one remained in production through 1990. Turbo charged versions of the 1.0 Liter 3 cylinder were limited in the colors they were offered in. The available colors included red, white and blue. Frome 1985 through 1988 the Chevy Sprint and the Chevy Sprint Metro both employed a computer controlled carbureted 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine that employed a hemispherical head design. Adding fuel injection required that the cylinder head be redesigned in order to add the additional cooling the engine required. This had the added effect of reducing the gase mileage. Finally the Sprint was rebadged as the Geo Metro. The popularity of the vehicle has been attributed to the economical base sticker price. For $5000 this vehicle came with AM/FM radio plus a cassette tape player and a digital clock as the only "extras".
